What Is a PDO Thread Lift?
Our faces naturally start out with a youthful V-shape; however, as we age, collagen loss and skin laxity cause that shape to soften, diminish, or even invert.
The gold standard for restoring this definition without surgery is the PDO Thread Lift at Serene Med Spa.
NovaThreads (PDO threads) use a process called “controlled healing” to stimulate your body’s natural collagen production. This strengthens and fortifies the tissues beneath your skin, helping restore and maintain a youthful V-shape. The PDO Thread Face Lift is a non-invasive treatment that instantly improves the look and feel of loose, sagging skin. It is particularly effective in areas that are difficult to treat with fillers, offering an instant, non-surgical facelift with natural-looking results.
What Is a PDO Thread?
NovaThreads are fully absorbable surgical sutures composed of polydioxanone (PDO). PDO threads are one type of suture thread used commonly in lifting procedures. Polycaprolactone (PCA) and Polylactic acid (PLA) are the other two suture types.
PDO threads are made from colorless polyester that dissolves in your body in four to six months using a natural process called hydrolysis. When your body senses foreign PDO sutures in your skin, it triggers cells called fibroblasts to stimulate collagen. Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body and provides elasticity and structure for your skin. Losing collagen is one of the main reasons people encounter aging skin.
Through its controlled healing technique, the PDO Thread Lift can:
Smooth your cheeks and mid-face area
Lift your brows
Tighten your neck
Lift your jowls
Firm up body areas
The Different Threads Used for Your PDO Thread Face Lift
Polydioxanone (PDO) has been proven safe for decades, with over 60 years of use in biomedical applications, particularly in cardiothoracic surgery. Today, PDO threads are trusted in aesthetic medicine for their ability to lift, tighten, and rejuvenate the skin.
At Serene Med Spa in Huntington & Barboursville, WV, we offer different types of PDO sutures, each designed for a specific purpose in your PDO Thread Lift:
PDO Twist Threads: Made of one or two intertwined threads, twist threads restore volume in sunken or hollow areas of the face.
PDO Barb Threads: Equipped with tiny barbs that latch into the skin, barb threads provide lifting and structural support for areas of sagging or drooping.
PDO Smooth Threads: These smooth sutures stimulate natural collagen production, improving skin quality, elasticity, and radiance over time.
What Should I Avoid Before My PDO Thread Lift Procedure?
One week prior to your PDO Thread Face Lift treatment, be sure to avoid over-the-counter blood thinner medications because they can complicate the procedure. These medications include Aleve, Motrin, and aspirin.
You should also avoid supplements such as Vitamin E, Omega-3 Capsules, and Garlic. Also, take arnica capsules and consume pineapple, including pineapple juice, to help reduce the chances of swelling and bruising.

The Process: What Happens During Your PDO Thread Lift?
At Serene Med Spa in Huntington & Barboursville, WV, your PDO Thread Lift is performed with precision and comfort in mind.
-
Preparation: The treatment area is gently numbed to ensure your comfort.
-
Thread Placement: A cannula pre-loaded with PDO thread is inserted beneath the skin. Threads are strategically placed to stimulate collagen production in areas of volume loss or skin folds, and to lift and tighten areas such as the neck, brows, or jawline.
-
Finishing Step: Once the cannula is removed, the PDO thread is trimmed and left beneath the skin to support collagen growth.
How Long Do VLift PDO Results Last?
VLift PDO threads are designed to be naturally and safely absorbed by your body over time. While the sutures themselves gradually dissolve, the structural support and enhanced collagen production they trigger typically keep your skin lifted and tightened for an average of nine to 12 months.
PDO Threads Recovery and Aftercare
Recovering from your PDO Thread Lift at Serene Med Spa is typically minimal. While you may experience mild bruising and swelling during the first 24–48 hours, most patients can return to much of their daily routine right away.
Aftercare Tips
Avoid rubbing or massaging your face during the first week, as this could dislodge the threads.
Sleep on your back with your head elevated on a pillow to prevent rolling onto your face at night.
Activities to Avoid in the First Few Weeks
Saunas or steam rooms
Sleeping on your side
Pursing your lips or drinking through a straw
Smoking
Intense exercise
Facial massages
Eating very large or chewy foods that strain facial muscles
Managing Discomfort
Mild bruising and tenderness at the insertion sites are normal.
Oral and topical arnica may help reduce bruising.
If you experience persistent pain beyond two weeks, contact Serene Med Spa for follow-up care.
Beyond the Face: Other PDO Thread Lift Treatment Areas
While most commonly used for facial rejuvenation, VLift PDO threads are highly effective at tightening and smoothing skin on the body. At Serene Med Spa, we utilize these threads to address skin laxity in areas such as the abdomen, buttocks, knees, and elbows. By stimulating localized collagen production, body threads can help firm “crepey” skin and provide a subtle lift to the knees or a non-surgical enhancement to the buttocks, delivering smoother, more youthful contours across the entire body.
